BAKERSFIELD LAUNCHES ANNUAL KWANZAA CELEBRATION
The SANKOFA Collective, together with the New Spirit Women’s Group, and Bakersfield Parks and Recreation Division, will jointly host the community affair on Friday, December 28, 2012, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, located at 1000 South Owens Street (SW corner of East California Avenue and South Owens Street), in Bakersfield, CA. The theme of this festive Kwanzaa event is celebrating, building, and strengthening, family, community, and cultural bonds.
The extravaganza will begin with the Harambee Art Gallery exhibition, an award winning collection of ethnic art provided by our local African American community that features a variety of heritage carvings, statues, masks, and artifacts. This breathtaking cultural exhibition functions to showcase the richness of African American heritage, and is intended to circulate, enrich, and reaffirm respect and appreciation for ancestral origins. The Kwanzaa program will begin at 1:00 pm and will feature performances by the high energy Oblinyanko Drum & Dance Ensemble, a Kora Musician/Storyteller, the Martin Luther King Community Center Dance Club, African folktales, and various vendors with cultural merchandise. Creative decorations provided by community youth will also be on display. Our entire Bakersfield community is invited to come and enjoy an enriching afternoon full of expressions of African American heritage. African attire is strongly emphasized for the cultural event to support the essence and ambiance of the ethnic theme.
