EDUCATION DAY – In Honor of Ed Roberts Day
Independent Living Center of Kern County invites people to attend a free EDUCATION DAY, Wednesday, January 23, from 2-5pm, at the Center, 5251 Office Park Drive 200, Bakersfield. Local universities, colleges, and Bakersfield Adult School will be on hand for people with a disability and others to explore education opportunities. Additionally, The Center's adaptive Assistive Technology Computer Lab will be available so people with disabilities, including youth, to experience available adaptive computers, software, and other tools to help further one's education or attain employment. A disability does not need to limit one's educational opportunities or success! 90% of The Center’s staff and board of directors all live with a disability.
Ed Roberts (1939-1995) contracted polio at age 14 and lived as a paraplegic. All his life, from high school until he applied for his doctorate studies, he fought to have education accessible to him. Due to Ed Roberts his admission to UC Berkeley broke the ice for students with disabilities. We honor Ed Roberts on his birthday, January 23, with Education Day. Ed Roberts later served as Director of the California Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (1976-1983).
Please RSVP at 325-1063 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
